Today's world of art and entertainment shares a deep connection with art history and contemporary technology. Professional artists employ traditional and digital media as a means of expression within a wide spectrum of opportunities. Careers dependent on (utilizing) imagination, foundational drawing and painting require in-depth knowledge of the visual world, fine-tuned creativity, and an analytical mind. These problem solving and visual idea development skills allow artists and designers to foster a life of creative success. The Art department equips art students with the foundational tools and cutting-edge industry information necessary to be successful throughout the creative fields.
To achieve visual literacy, students must have a thorough knowledge of art history and a solid understanding of traditional as well as digital tool sets to create art. By learning to draw and paint the world in an accurate manner, training their eyes to see effectively, students create a fertile vocabulary and visual well (vault) from which to draw from (upon). Life studies will accompany the creation of imaginative works. Through understanding and interpretation of the ideas and knowledge of the world around us, the students can then communicate ideas, construct visual narratives, landscapes, machines, and characters that have never existed.
Drawing upon their own life experiences, students will develop a personal point of view and express their own voice. As technique becomes second nature, "What" is being said will become more important than "how" it is being said. They will make their work more powerful by giving it an internal emotion welded to sound logic and order based on their own observations. Being able to draw and paint well is not enough. In tandem with learning to draw and paint is the equally important nurturing of the mind. Ideas are the coin of the realm and those who can put their ideas to work have the best chances for long term success. One must learn to communicate visual ideas in a universal way, which communicates to the many rather than the few.
The Art Department provides a full art education at a fraction of the cost of attending private art colleges. Art education is not something only for the rich. Artists should be able to afford to learn the foundations of visual language. Their personal nature requires it and their happiness often depends on it. Fortunately the world has needs for visually literate artists.
